General Sports Worldwide is happy to announce our long standing client Steve McLaren has joined Manchester United as one of Erik ten Hag’s assistant coaches, alongside Mitchell van der Gaag.
The former England national team boss returned to Old Trafford on Monday 23rd May – bringing with him the know-how and “what it takes to win” mentality owing to his two years assisting Sir Alex Ferguson, in which they guided the club to an iconic treble in 1999 – winning the Premier League title, FA Cup & UEFA Champions League.
This won’t be a new relationship for McLaren and Ten Hag, having previously worked alongside each other at Dutch club, FC Twente.
McLaren has had a great managerial career including with: the English national team, Middlesbrough, FC Twente, VfL Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Newcastle United, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Queens Park Rangers. During his 5 year stint at Middlesbrough McLaren established himself as the most successful manager in the club’s history – taking them to the UEFA Cup Final in 2005-06 and winning the League Cup in the 2003-04 season. He had similar success in the Netherlands guiding FC Twente to win the Dutch Football League, The Eredivisie, in 2009-10.
